Question 1

Does BGInfo work on Windows 11?

Accepted Answer

Yes — Microsoft still ships BGInfo via Sysinternals for Windows 10 and 11. Many people look for a BGInfo alternative because wallpaper refresh, version fields, and startup scripts can be finicky. SysOverlay shows the same kind of stats in a live desktop HUD on Windows 10 and 11. See our BGInfo alternative page for a full comparison.

Question 2

How do I remove BGInfo from my desktop?

Accepted Answer

Exit BGInfo from the system tray, remove Startup or scheduled-task entries, and restore your normal wallpaper. SysOverlay does not modify wallpaper — it uses a live overlay. Step-by-step: see our BGInfo on Windows 11 guide.

Question 3

Is BGInfo free?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Microsoft distributes BGInfo at no cost via Sysinternals. SysOverlay's local HUD is also free with no account; Home Plus or Pro is optional for a multi-PC dashboard.

Question 4

What is the best BGInfo alternative?

Accepted Answer

DesktopInfo and PowerBGInfo are popular free options that generate wallpaper images like BGInfo. SysOverlay is a BGInfo alternative with a live overlay (real-time CPU, RAM, disk) plus optional Home Plus or Pro fleet dashboard — read-only, no remote control.

Question 5

Can someone remotely control my PC through SysOverlay?

Accepted Answer

No. SysOverlay does not provide remote desktop, remote shell, or unattended access to your machines. The agent detects and explains problems, then offers click-to-run Fixlets that run locally on the PC where you are sitting — never launched from the cloud onto someone else's computer.

Question 6

Do I need an account to use the free agent?

Accepted Answer

No. Install the Windows agent and see live health on the desktop immediately — no signup, no credit card. Create an account when you want plain-English alerts and click-to-run Fixlets across your fleet (Home Plus or Pro).

Question 7

How hard is setup?

Accepted Answer

Download the installer, run it (per-user, no admin prompt), and the HUD appears at the bottom of your screen. Open Admin → Client settings to toggle stats, pick a theme, move the overlay, or switch compact mode. If you want fleet features, sign in once from the dashboard window on each PC. Auto-start with Windows is enabled by default; you can turn it off anytime.

Question 8

How do agent updates work?

Accepted Answer

After your first install, the Windows agent checks for signed updates automatically (about every six hours) and can install them in the background — no desktop installer wizard and no need to re-download from the site. When a new version is ready, a callout appears on the HUD; you can also open Client settings → App updates to check or install anytime. Updates are cryptographically signed before they reach your PC. If you are on an older build from before the in-app updater shipped, install once from the download page to get onto the auto-update path.

Question 9

What notifications will I see?

Accepted Answer

Every user gets update notifications: a HUD callout when a new agent version is available, plus App updates in Client settings. With Home Plus or Pro and enrolled PCs, you also get fleet health alerts on the dashboard (plain device names, recommended fixes), matching in-HUD callouts that point to Tools, highlighted recommended actions on the Tools page, and email when a PC crosses a threshold like low disk or high CPU. Nothing runs remotely — notifications only tell you what to fix locally.

Question 10

Can I customize what the HUD shows?

Accepted Answer

Yes — and it's free. In the dashboard window, open Client settings → HUD display. Turn individual fields on or off (hostname, IP, CPU, RAM, C: disk, total disk, battery, uptime), choose an accent theme, pick a screen corner, and switch between a compact single-line strip and labeled cards. Settings stay on that PC.

Question 11

Who is SysOverlay built for?

Accepted Answer

The person who keeps a household's or small office's computers running without a dedicated IT person — the one everyone calls when a PC acts up. Parents checking kids' laptops, students watching their own disk and battery, and moms or dads who are the family tech support. If you look after anywhere from a couple of PCs to a couple dozen and want clear visibility and guided fixes without enterprise Remote Monitoring and Management (RMM) pricing or complexity, it's for you.

Question 12

Can parents monitor kids' laptops without spying on them?

Accepted Answer

SysOverlay shows read-only health stats — disk space, battery, CPU, and optional crash counts — not browsing history, keystrokes, or screen content. There is no remote desktop. Parents and students see the same kind of plain-English alerts you would check yourself before homework night: low disk, a dying battery, or an app crashing repeatedly. Fixes run locally on the PC in front of you.

Question 13

How do I check if my child's computer is running out of disk space?

Accepted Answer

Install the free SysOverlay agent on their Windows laptop. The HUD shows free disk on the desktop at a glance. With Home Plus or Pro, your dashboard lists every enrolled family PC — when storage drops below about 15 GB free, you get an Active alert and optional email, plus a recommended local cleanup tool on that machine.

Question 14

Is SysOverlay good for students — high school, college, or grad school?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The free HUD helps any student see hostname, disk, RAM, CPU, battery, and uptime without opening Settings. When a laptop fills up before a project deadline or starts thermal-throttling during games, the overlay makes it obvious. Students living at home can enroll in a parent's Home Plus dashboard; students on their own can use the free agent solo or share one household account.

Question 15

I'm not technical — can I still tell if our family PCs are healthy?

Accepted Answer

SysOverlay is built for the mom, dad, or relative everyone calls for tech help — not for IT departments. Alerts use plain English ("Disk space running low on Emma's laptop") and point to one-click local tools. You do not need Event Viewer, PowerShell, or remote-access software that hackers love to abuse.

Question 16

Is SysOverlay good for independent home PC repair technicians?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Many solo and mobile techs use SysOverlay as a lightweight health layer before they open Event Viewer or run cleanup on a customer's machine. The free HUD shows disk, RAM, CPU, battery, and uptime on the desktop; Home Plus or Pro gives you one dashboard for every PC you enroll — intake laptops, repeat customers, and your own bench systems — with plain-English alerts and local fixlets instead of enterprise RMM pricing.

Question 17

Can SysOverlay replace Geek Squad or big-box support software?

Accepted Answer

SysOverlay is not affiliated with Geek Squad or any retailer. It is a read-only monitoring and click-to-run Fixlet tool for independent techs who want Geek Squad-style visibility — see which machine is low on disk, overheating, or crashing — without remote desktop, without bloated RMM contracts, and without running arbitrary commands from the cloud. You still fix the PC in person; SysOverlay tells you where to start.

Question 18

Do repair shops need remote desktop to monitor customer PCs?

Accepted Answer

No — and many shops prefer not to. SysOverlay never provides remote control. Customer agents send read-only telemetry to your tenant-isolated dashboard; when an alert fires, the recommended cleanup or diagnostic tool runs locally on the machine in front of you (or the customer, with your guidance). That fits bench work, house calls, and drop-off repair without the security baggage of unattended remote access.

Question 19

How is SysOverlay different from full RMM for a one-person repair shop?

Accepted Answer

Traditional RMM platforms target MSPs managing hundreds of endpoints with scripting, patching, and remote shell. SysOverlay targets roughly 5–25 Windows PCs: a HUD on each machine, a simple fleet dashboard, Active alerts with recommended local tools, and optional email — at a fraction of MSP pricing. If you need remote PowerShell at scale, keep your RMM; if you need "which customer laptop is almost full?" before the house call, SysOverlay fits.

Question 20

What does Home Plus cost?

Accepted Answer

$60/yr billed annually covers up to 5 licensed devices — about $5/mo for a typical household. Each device above 5 adds $5/device/year. Home Plus is annual billing only; you choose your licensed device count at checkout.

Question 21

What is SysOverlay Pro and who is it for?

Accepted Answer

Pro is for repair shops and small businesses managing roughly 11–50 Windows PCs. From $21.58/month or $259/yr when billed annually (11–30 devices) + $10/device/year above 30 (max 50). Monthly or annual billing at checkout. It includes everything in Home Plus plus customer tags, device notes, intake health snapshots, branded customer reports, inline device rename, and repair event timelines.

Question 22

Is my data shared with other customers?

Accepted Answer

No. Each account's devices are isolated in the database with row-level security. Your fleet data is visible only to users signed into your account.

Question 23

How do I contact SysOverlay support?

Accepted Answer

Use the contact form at /contact for the fastest response — it goes straight to our support inbox. You can also email support@sysoverlay.com directly. We reply from support@sysoverlay.com.

Question 24

Why is the installer unsigned, and is it safe?

Accepted Answer

During our initial launch the installer is not yet code-signed, so Windows SmartScreen may show a blue “Unknown publisher” prompt — click More info, then Run anyway. “Unknown publisher” means Windows hasn’t yet built reputation for a brand-new app; it is not a malware detection. You can verify what the agent does: it has no remote-control or remote-shell capability, it only reads local health metrics (hostname, disk, CPU, RAM, battery, optional crash summaries) and sends them to your own account when signed in, and any repair tools run locally on the PC in front of you. Prefer to skip the browser prompt? Install via WinGet — run “winget install ReTang.SysOverlay” — which downloads through the package manager instead of the browser (Windows may still show a first-run prompt while the app is unsigned). Authenticode code signing is planned, which will remove the prompt entirely.
