Question 1

Does BGInfo work on Windows 11?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Microsoft still distributes BGInfo via Sysinternals for Windows 10 and 11. Common Windows 11 issues include slow wallpaper refresh, version strings in custom fields, and awkward startup setup. SysOverlay is a free BGInfo alternative with a live desktop agent instead of a static bitmap.

Question 2

What is BGInfo in Windows?

Accepted Answer

BGInfo is a free Sysinternals utility from Microsoft that draws system information (hostname, IP, OS version, uptime, and custom fields) onto your desktop wallpaper as a bitmap image. It is commonly used by IT admins and home-lab builders on Windows 10 and 11. SysOverlay is a BGInfo alternative that shows the same kind of stats in a live desktop agent instead of painting the wallpaper.

Question 3

Is BGInfo free?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Microsoft distributes BGInfo at no cost through Sysinternals. SysOverlay's local desktop agent is also free with no account. Optional Home Plus or Pro adds a multi-PC dashboard with annual prepaid billing.

Question 4

How do I remove BGInfo from my desktop on Windows 11?

Accepted Answer

Close BGInfo from the system tray if it is running, remove BGInfo from your Startup folder or logon scripts, delete any scheduled task that launches BGInfo, and set your wallpaper back to a normal image (BGInfo may have replaced it with a bitmap). If you switch to SysOverlay, uninstall BGInfo and install the SysOverlay agent — it does not modify your wallpaper file.

Question 5

How do I add BGInfo to startup on Windows 11?

Accepted Answer

Common methods: add a shortcut to BGInfo in the Startup folder (shell:startup), create a scheduled task at user logon, deploy via Group Policy logon script, or use the Run registry key. SysOverlay enables per-user auto-start by default with a scheduled task — see our BGInfo startup comparison guide for details.

Question 6

How do I uninstall BGInfo on Windows 11?

Accepted Answer

BGInfo is portable — there is no Control Panel uninstaller. Close it from the tray, remove logon scripts or scheduled tasks, set your wallpaper back to a normal image, then delete BGInfo.exe and your .bgi file. Install SysOverlay afterward for a live agent that does not touch wallpaper.

Question 7

Why does BGInfo not recognize Windows 11?

Accepted Answer

Older BGInfo configs and custom fields sometimes expect legacy version strings. Microsoft Q&A threads document workarounds for version detection. SysOverlay reads Windows version natively on Windows 10 and 11 without manual field tweaks.

Question 8

Does BGInfo slow down or break when I change wallpaper?

Accepted Answer

BGInfo refreshes a bitmap on your wallpaper, so theme changes, slideshow wallpapers, or resolution changes can leave stale text or require re-running the tool. SysOverlay uses a live overlay on top of the desktop, independent of your wallpaper.

Question 9

Can I use SysOverlay instead of BGInfo on Windows 11?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Install the free SysOverlay agent on Windows 10 or 11 for hostname, IP, CPU, RAM, disk, battery, and uptime on the desktop. No account is required for the local agent.
