Question 1

What is BGInfo in Windows?

Accepted Answer

BGInfo is a free Microsoft Sysinternals utility that paints system information (hostname, IP, OS version, uptime, and custom fields) onto the desktop wallpaper as a bitmap. SysOverlay is a BGInfo alternative that shows similar stats in a live desktop agent on Windows 10 and 11.

Question 2

How do I remove BGInfo from my desktop on Windows 11?

Accepted Answer

Exit BGInfo from the system tray, remove it from Startup or scheduled tasks, and restore your normal wallpaper. SysOverlay does not modify wallpaper files — it draws a live overlay on top of the desktop.

Question 3

Does BGInfo work on Windows 11?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Microsoft still distributes BGInfo via Sysinternals for Windows 10 and 11. Common issues include slow wallpaper refresh, Windows 11 version strings in older configs, and awkward startup setup. SysOverlay is a BGInfo alternative built for Windows 10 and 11 with a live desktop agent instead of a static bitmap.

Question 4

What is the best BGInfo alternative?

Accepted Answer

Popular BGInfo alternatives include DesktopInfo (Glenn Delahoy’s live overlay), PowerBGInfo (PowerShell-generated wallpaper), and SysOverlay (live desktop agent with optional multi-PC dashboard). SysOverlay shows real-time CPU, RAM, and disk on the desktop and offers optional Home Plus or Pro for read-only fleet visibility — no remote desktop or remote shell.

Question 5

How do I run desktop system info at startup without GPO?

Accepted Answer

BGInfo usually needs a logon script, Run key, scheduled task, or Group Policy Object. SysOverlay installs per-user and enables auto-start with Windows by default via a scheduled task — no GPO or admin scripting required.

Question 6

Is there a free BGInfo replacement?

Accepted Answer

Yes. SysOverlay's local desktop agent is free with no account. Home Plus or Pro adds a private dashboard for multiple PCs (Home Plus: $5/mo ($60/yr billed annually · up to 5 devices) + $0.42/mo per extra device above 5). DesktopInfo is a free live overlay; PowerBGInfo is a free wallpaper script.

Question 7

What is a good BGInfo alternative PowerShell script?

Accepted Answer

PowerBGInfo is a popular PowerShell module that generates desktop wallpaper images with system info — similar to Sysinternals BGInfo but scriptable. SysOverlay is a BGInfo alternative that skips wallpaper entirely: a live agent with real-time CPU, RAM, and disk on Windows 10 and 11, auto-start at logon, and optional fleet dashboard.

Question 8

How do I uninstall BGInfo on Windows 11?

Accepted Answer

Exit BGInfo from the system tray, remove startup entries (Startup folder, scheduled tasks, or GPO logon scripts), restore your normal wallpaper, and delete BGInfo.exe and your .bgi config. SysOverlay installs separately and does not modify wallpaper files.

Question 9

Does SysOverlay allow remote control like RMM tools?

Accepted Answer

No. SysOverlay is read-only monitoring only. Agents send health telemetry when signed in; repair tools run locally on the PC in front of you. There is no remote desktop, remote shell, or unattended access.

Question 10

How is SysOverlay different from DesktopInfo and PowerBGInfo?

Accepted Answer

BGInfo and PowerBGInfo paint system information onto the desktop wallpaper. DesktopInfo (Glenn Delahoy) is a live overlay configured with an INI file. SysOverlay is a live desktop agent that updates CPU, RAM, and disk in real time and can show threshold warnings — plus an optional fleet dashboard.
